Welcome friends! Today I’d like to share with you a perfect example of turning a furniture piece into a bathroom vanity.
A friend of mine recently contacted me in search of a vanity for her remodeled bathroom. I happened to have the perfect furniture piece in stock. This small buffet was the right height, the right width, and had just the right amount of character. All it really needed was a modern color update.
Here’s the buffet in its original form. It was brown-stained with a heavy coat of polyurethane. Since its future home was going to be in a bathroom, I used the polyurethane to my advantage by leaving that solid clear coat to help protect the wood against water and moisture. Leaving it meant I needed to choose a paint that would adhere to the polyurethane. There was only one choice…
Annnie Sloan’s Chalk Paint
Annie Sloan Chalk Paint is known for its adhesion capability. There’s no need to sand prior to application.
My friend chose the modern Graphite color – a very chic dark gray.
I’ve used Granite on several pieces before and it has never disappointed me.
Although two coats of the Graphite chalk paint covered nicely, I applied a third for the added protection in the bathroom. A clear coat of Annie Sloan’s Clear Wax was then brushed on. To give the finish a little more depth, I then wiped on a dark wax. Finally, I finished off the top with another coat of the clear wax.
Did you get all that?
Paint… Clear Wax… Dark Wax… Clear Wax…
then buff for for a slight sheen.
One of the things I love most about Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint is the color variation you get when the paint dries. You cannot achieve this with a latex paint. Gorgeous!
A shoe shine brush with very soft bristles is my secret weapon to making the wax shine. In thirty days this wax will harden to protect the wood for many years in the bathroom.
This past weekend was also spent sanding four other large sideboards and credenzas, so enter your email on the sidebar or follow on Facebook to receive updates on future makeovers as they’re added.
Thank you & Enjoy!
