When I found this old schoolhouse chalkboard being thrown away, there was no way I was going to let the trash truck get it. The rustic frame was beautiful. The chalkboard just needed a little love.
Here’s how this old schoolhouse chalkboard looked when I picked it up. I may be dating myself when I say I remember these being in every classroom of my elementary school. There was no such thing as a whiteboard or smart board back then!
I loved the worn, rustic look of the wooden frame and wanted to maintain that. It’s the most beautiful part of this piece.
On the other hand, I feel it’s necessary to always clean the items I pick up so I feel comfortable reselling them to a client who will put them in their home.
To do so, I just lightly sanded the frame. I purposely did not fill the original screw holes that were used to hang the frame. These add character. I lightly wiped on Driftwood stain – a light gray, semi-transparent stain. Then finished sealing the frame with a clear wax.
The customer requested a basic black chalkboard paint which ended up being a perfect contrast that made the frame stand out even more. After lightly sanding the chalkboard itself and evening out the pitted areas, five coats of the black were applied.
The chalkboard paint went on much easier than I expected and leveled out very nicely.
Here’s a photo of the vintage schoolhouse chalkboard hanging in my client’s home. Absolutely beautiful isn’t it!
