Have you ever added an image to your WordPress blog post only to find that it turns blurry when you re-size it to a custom size? The photo appears clear on your camera and even when you add it to your WordPress Media file so, in theory, it should scale properly when you re-size it according the image options in WordPress. This post explains how to ensure your photos retain their clarity when you enlarge them in WordPress.
Blog posts show best when the images are enticing. Readers not only enjoy the breaks in text, they love that the images tell the story just as well as the written words; so it’s best to enlarge your photos so they fill most of the page width.
The following image was uploaded to my WordPress Media file with the size set at Medium. The image is much too small for my blog post though. I prefer an image width of 500.
If I were to click on the above image and edit it to a Custom image size of 500, I would end up with the following image. Notice how blurry the image is.
However, if I take that original Medium size image and edit it to be “Full Size” (in this case a width of 768), then I end up with the following image. Notice how clear the image is.
The larger Full Size image with a width of 768 actually posts much clearer than the smaller Custom image with a width of 500.
The problem with choosing the Full Size image option for every image is that the size can vary. Sometimes it will be a width of 768 and sometimes 1024, depending on the image. This is just too large for the width of most blog pages. If blog images are too large, they don’t fit on the screen well and make a post difficult to read.
However, if after you’ve sized an image to Full Size, you then go back in and edit the image to a Custom Size of 500, you end up with the follow image. Notice how clear the 500 width image is now.
To ensure your photos post clearly to your blog, upload the image as a Full Size image and then edit and downsize the image to the smaller Custom image width.
