If you could choose one household task to do that would promise to make your life less chaotic, lower your stress level, and give you peace of mind would you do it?
When the kids are home for school vacation, I often feel like keeping the house clean is an uphill battle. I feel like that little hampster on a rotating wheel that runs and runs but never seems to get anywhere.
I’m obsessive compulsive when it comes to keeping the house in order. Chaos makes me crazy and raises my stress level. That’s crazy in itself, right? But for those of you that are organization freaks, like myself, dishes in the sink, a messy countertop, or having to step over mountains of shoes when I walk into the house makes me nuts!
Everything has a place and there’s a place for everything!
If not, it goes out the door. My whole Live With Less moto.
There is one household task, however, that even if I clean up nothing else, makes me feel better…
Clearing the floors.
Next time your house feels chaotic, messy, and cluttered, try getting everything up off the floor and see how it changes your home and how it makes you feel.
Put the shoes away and clear the hallway floor.
Turn the chairs over and put them up on top of the table (like you used to do in elementary school).
Pick up the laundry, blankets, pillows, and toys that have been scattered around. Even if it just means placing everything up higher on the dining room table for later sorting. Just get everything up off the floor.
Of course this is where you’ll have to love the the vacuum you’re using. If you have one of those big chunky uprights, consider this a vacuum intervention.
Ladies (and gentlemen), it’s time for an upgrade.
Vacuums have gotten remarkably light over the past 5 years. You can now get even more power from the new stick vacuums than those old 50 pound uprights used to provide.
Using one of those old, chunky upright vacuums is like watching TV on an old tube or projection TV instead of today’s flat screen. The newer models may be thinner and lighter but they’re much more powerful and much more enjoyable to use.
Last Christmas I purchased the Shark HV302 Rocket Ultralight Upright vacuum for my Mom. She’s in her 70’s and her built-in vacuum system with the 15-foot hose had just gotten too heavy for her to use on a regular basis.
The majority of her house has thick carpeting, but she also has wood floors and tile and it went from carpet to the smooth surfaces to the area rugs beautifully. She loved the vacuum so much, she and my Dad purchased one for me for my birthday this past year.
I was so happy. I’ve been wanting a stick vacuum for at least two years. I wanted something I could use for quick clean-up without having to pull out our heavier canister Meile vacuum (which, by the way, I also love).
To my surprise, not only did it work perfectly on the wood floors and fit under the kitchen cabinet toe-kicks where all the crumbs gather, I cannot believe how much it sucks out of the shag carpet in my living room and the wall-to-wall carpets in the bedrooms!
The suction on the Shark Rocket stick vacuum is incredible.
So incredible, in fact, it has saved me a ton of money on vacuum bags that I would have had to purchase otherwise. This vacuum doesn’t use bags. Instead you just empty the clear canister as you see it fill up. In a home with a dog and three kids you won’t believe how much this vacuum picks up!
(get ready for a gross photo…)
Gross… I know! I saved this to show you how much this vacuum pulls out of your carpets! We live in a 3 bedroom New England colonial home. Carpets in the bedrooms but hardwood and area rugs most everywhere else. This pile of dirt, dust, pet hair, and whatever else is from one round of vacuuming and I vacuum once a week.
I have probably saved between $50-$100 on vacuum bags in the past year alone. That means that in 2-3 years, this vacuum will have paid for itself!
This Shark stick vacuum is corded so you never lose suction. Well… I shouldn’t say never. In tomorrow’s post, I’ll explain how to ensure your Shark Rocket stick vacuum maintains its suction and keeps working like new. It’s so easy!
A few other features of the Shark Shark Rocket Upright vacuum I love are that the cord is extra-long (which means I’m not constantly changing outlets every few minutes), the canister is very easy to empty, the rotating brush head has two powerful speeds (one for thick carpet and one for hardwood/tile, and the brush head and wand quickly & easily detach with the push of a button so you can quickly attached accessory brushes and crevice tools.
Finally, my favorite feature… between the suction and the smaller upholstery attachment the Shark Rocket Upright stick vacuum does an amazing job removing the white dog hairs my precious beagle leaves behind on my very dark gray couch. It’s a life-saver!
I’ve sort of run off on a tangent telling you how much I love this vacuum when I’m supposed to be teaching you how to “learn to love to vacuum”. The point is, the single task of keeping your floors clear by picking everything up off of them and keeping them clean with a powerful, easy-to-use vacuum that you actually don’t mind using can instantly make your home feel less cluttered. Thus, if you’re like me, lowering your stress level.
Vacuuming your floors is also exercise which also lowers your stress level.
So if there is one household task you do today… learn to love to vacuum.
