Thanksgiving is just two months away so I’ve been on the search for holiday items that can be used year-round. When I found this thrifted kids’ farm table and chairs I didn’t hesitate to buy it. Even though my kids are all now much too big for it, I remember the days when they were little and wanting to set a special Thanksgiving Day table just for them.
This mini farm table was well-loved when I found it; but no scratch, paint, or glitter would keep me from snatching it up. Most kids’ tables are very plain with straight legs. This one is an exact, mini version of a gray & white farm table I just refinished and will share with you later this week.
I completely sanded down the table with my DeWalt Rotary Sander (my favorite power tool) and then gave the table two coats of semi-gloss polyurethane, lightly sanding between coats. This oil-based coating offers the best protection and allows the little kiddos to eat, drink, and play without you fearing they’re going to destroy it.
The table came with three chairs which I haven’t refinished just yet. One of them is missing a rung which you can see in the photo, but it’s still very solid so I’m going to keep it with the set. I considered painting them, but love the authenticity of the stained look so I’ll do my best to keep that.
I’ll be working on the chairs this week before this set goes off to a friend of mine. She plans to include it as an auction item in her school’s mid-November auction. Each class makes a gift to donate to the auction so the kids will actually make their own table runner. They’ll paint one by tracing their own little hands and turning each print into the image of a turkey. Adorable right?!
If you’re involved in fundraising for your own children’s school, be sure to check out my new series on School Fundraisers. You’re a Mom (or Dad) and an entrepreneur, but you’re also a volunteer. My plan is to post a new school fundraiser to this series every Tuesday – so check back weekly or subscribe so you get the posts delivered right to your inbox.
Do you have an old kids’ table laying around? I’d love to refinish it for you for the holidays.
