Paint is the the least expensive way to make a huge design change in your home. My living room walls alone have been five different colors in the past thirteen so tying these two rooms together and making them feel cohesive using color is important.
The original colors throughout my home were yellows, tans, dark reds, and olive greens. You can see these colors still exist in my dining room. The adjoining living room was painted a medium gray last year and on the next round of painting will go to a much lighter gray – almost white. This isn’t a split photo, it’s an actual view looking from one room to the other.
Once I painted the gray walls, the challenge was to make the cool gray in the living room and the bright yellow in the dining room feel cohesive.
I decided to paint two vertical strips of color on opposite living room walls, using the colors from both rooms. Using a level and Frog tape, I carefully taped off the area and began painting random horizontal bands within the vertical column. I love the result.
To slightly conceal the outlet, paint the horizontal band the same white color.
The fireplace in the dining room is already a dark gray, but in order to bring a little more gray into the yellow dining room, I painted this side of the column gray. Using just a little yellow (and a few small red accessories – not pictured) in the gray living room and then just a little gray in the yellow dining room, my home now feels like it’s intentional and not in transition waiting for the next round of paint.
