Are you a thrift store shopper? If you’ve never been to a second-hand store, the last week of December and early to mid January are the best times to try it. People are decluttering and cleaning out their closets to make room for the gifts they got for Christmas. And wait unit you see what I got at the thrift store!

The only thing I used to shop for at thrift stores was wood furniture that I knew I could sand down and refinish with a new topcoat.
I never sifted through the clothes because I figured I could find new items on sale at department stores for close to the same price.
What was I thinking?
Most department store sale prices are much higher than most thrift stores. Even on sale, items like jackets and blazers usually still run from $50 to $150 or more. So I would never buy any unique coats just for the fun of it. I would stick with super practical styles that I knew would last a minimum of 5 to 10 years. I’ve had coats for 15+ years.
Another reason I started checking out the second-hand stores lately is because I’ve been addicted to the social media videos of shoppers at thrift stores.
I’m not sure why, exactly. I have no interest in bringing trinkets or random glassware into our home. If anything, I’m constantly donating to clear things out.
But watching these women slowly poking around the store looking at this and that is relaxing to me.
A calm wandering.
Blood-pressure lowering.
Free of expectations.
That’s how I feel when I go to the thrift store.
I never go to a thrift store with the intention or need to buy something.
I go to meander and browse with no expectations.
And I most of the time I walk out empty-handed because I’m very careful about not bringing random items into our home just because they were cheap.
But if I do happen to find something unique…. amazing… and priced lower than I could ever imagine, then it’s a happy surprise – a hit of dopamine – and that makes me smile.
And we all know smiling improves mood, mindset, and yes, helps lower my blood pressure.
Which is exactly what happened the last two times I went to Savers thrift store.
.
The BalticBorn Sweater
The first thing I do when I get to Savers is drop off a bag of donations. When you do this, they give you a 20% coupon to use in the store.
Then I usually peruse through the sweater section.
And every once in a while I find an amazing sweater like this light blue, bell sleeve sweater, NEW WITH TAGS from BalticBorn for only $10!
It’s the softest sweater I’ve ever felt. Amazing!
You cannot see it in the screenshot below, because the little present icon is covering up the price, but the price is $67 on their website right now.
Big smile!

Then I move on to the coat section.
A lot of women have shoe obsessions.
Not me. My obsession lately is top coats.
You can have on a basic t-shirt and leggings, but can hide it and look totally put together with a nice coat.
And in the last 2 weeks, I found FIVE of them!
.
The Kenneth Cole Winter Puffer
This first coat I found is this Kenneth Cole, champagne colored winter puffer jacket. And it still had the black plastic tag attachment on it, so I think it’s new.
For only $13 my friends! THIRTEEN!!!
.
The Tommy Hilfiger Blue Trench
On the same day I found this Tommy Hilfiger blue trench coat WITH A HOOD.
I’m pretty sure this one is brand new too. There were 5 of them on the rack all in perfect condition.
Pardon the wrinkles. I literally got home, took it out of the bag and put it on.
I have Tommy Hilfiger sweaters, blazers, boots, and a winter dress coat by this brand. All wonderful quality in colors I love. All classic styles that will last decades.
And, if you’re going to wear a coat in the rain, shouldn’t it have a hood? I think so.
This trench coat also has both a full zipper and button closures. LOVE!
This blue trench was only $20!
I ran an online search and found this trench on several re-seller sites for $59+.

The Covington Black Trench
Two weeks earlier I found three more coats ranging from $7 to $13.
This black Covington trench coat may not have a hood, but it’s in perfect condition and perfect for work.

.
The Gallery Blazer
Next, this Gallery coat is more like a long blazer. It’s lightweight and great for 50 to 65 degree weather. The color is a unique greenish-gray. While it may look large and boxy in the photo, the cut on it is very tailored.
I think this one was $8.
While I was searching Amazon for a similar blazer for you, I found these amazing three. You can click on each image to see them on Amazon.
.
The Jessica Howard Long Camel Trench
This last coat is a Jessica London trench coat. I don’t have any coats in this camel color so even though it was a size and a half too large for me, for only $13 it came home with me.
After finding the other trench coats, I may donate this one back.

So, I think I’m all set for the snow and rain, wouldn’t you say?
