This turquoise striped bench is one of my favorite makeovers to date. The bright color and modern design create the perfect statement piece for a living room, dining room, or entryway.
When we first got married, my husband and I lived in central Massachusetts and purchased a 6,000 square foot Victorian home. We lived there while we renovated every room. The plaster dust was everywhere for three straight years!
I should have known back then that refinishing was destined to be in my future… It only took me 18 years to figure it out.
At the time, almost all of our money went into the renovation and there was very little left for furniture. This bench along with some other pieces were purchased at yard sales. Then when we moved to eastern Mass., I gave almost all of those pieces away. To my surprise, this bench recently turned up at my in-law’s home.
I completely forgot I gave it to them; but since they didn’t have a place for it, it was collecting dust in their basement. With my new-found love of refinishing and painting furniture, I was more than happy to take it back.
As organized as I am, I still can’t seem to find the single “before” photo I took. In its original state, this bench was a 1970’s brown stain covered in a thick coat of polyurethane. An hour of sanding removed enough of the poly for the two coats of primer to stick.
Once the primer dried, I applied two coats of high quality Benjamin Moore Advance paint.
Then came the fun part… the creative part… my favorite part!
Tape and paint the design..
Did you notice both the blue and the green painter’s tape? The green tape is Frog Tape, the blue is that “other” tape. I ran out of my favorite green Frog Tape in the middle of this project and had to use some of the blue. I’ve said it before (in this post) and I’ll say it again… you may pay a few more dollars, but save yourself the time and the aggravation and just buy the Frog Tape. You’ll thank me for it later!
This solid wood bench is 72 inches long 19-1/2 inches wide and 18 inches high. The height is perfect for either a coffee table or a bench. As you can see it’s the height of this dining chair. It’s very sturdy, but due to the expanse between the four legs, it’s not clear as to the original builder’s intent… bench or coffee table?
This Bench / Coffee Table is for sale in my Shop.

I love this! It looks great, and the stripes are eye-catching yet simple. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! I love adding very bright colors to furniture to make them stand out but not clash with over patterns.
