For those of you that follow EntriWays on Facebook, you’ve probably noticed I spent the morning adding several new furniture pieces to my Shop. Dressers, desks, beds, and a farm table. You can check out them out HERE.
Today, I’d like to show you one of those dressers.
This antique dresser has a great size and shape to be extra storage in any room. Use it in the bedroom, fit it in a bathroom, tuck it into a nook, or showcase the beautiful gold flower knobs in your living room!
The dresser was clearly “loved” for many years when I found it. The solid wood had a few dents and dings and the antique lock was removed from the top right drawer – leaving a rather large hole; but after a little wood-filler and sanding, you’d never know. Since the drawers all slid smoothly into their solid wood casements and the drawer boxes were clean and in excellent condition, I knew cleaning up the exterior wouldn’t be problem. Here’s a picture after it was sanded down…
As you can see, most dents and dings sand right out of solid wood thanks to my favorite refinishing tool – the DeWalt Random-Orbit Sander.
A random-orbit sander has a round sanding head. The round sand paper discs easily stick to the head via a Velcro-type hook and loop so changing the paper takes less than two seconds. Also, the head rotates in a very smooth circular motion.
At one point, I sent my sander in for some basic maintenance and borrowed my brother’s Makita orbital sander. Makita is a very good brand, but this particular sander had a square head that moved back and forth which seemed to make it more difficult to remove the finish. On top of that, the square sandpaper had to be attached onto the head with metal clips. I couldn’t seem to get a flush fit so the paper kept coming loose. I found it to be much more difficult to sand with the square sander; so take my advice and choose the round DeWalt Random-Orbit Sander!
The dresser was painted with two coats of a high quality Benjamin Moore paint. The finish is a low-lustre sheen that’s very durable. It reminds me of the finish on black furniture you find at Pottery Barn.
The brass knobs were salvaged from another dresser project I’m working on which I can hopefully reveal to you later this week. I’m just waiting for the new lion head pulls to arrive in the mail. Wait until you see them!
I just love these flower knobs and they suit this dresser much better than the other.
The drawers boxes were in excellent condition – a key consideration when I choose a dresser to refinish.
