The workshop suddenly became overflowing with projects this week. Five tall dressers to be exact. All curbside finds that happened to be in my neighborhood. Looking at them all and the limited space, I did something I very rarely do. I decided to let two of them go as unfinished pieces. Then I got to work on the three that remained. Here is the first… a tall dresser refinished in Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy blue.
This tall, solid wood dresser with dove-tailed drawers was right at the end of my street. Well, it didn’t look exactly like this. It was covered in a reddish brown stain with deep scratches all over. A rotary sander removed the stain and smoothed the scratches.
Supplies List
Here’s a list of supplies used on this project:
- Craftsman rotary sander
- 8-hole 60-grit sanding discs
- Extension cord
- Benjamin Moore Regal Select eggshell paint in Hale Navy (Pearl finish is recommended)
- Benjamin Moore Stays Clear, low lustre
- Rustoleum spray paint in metallic gold for the knobs
- Square or Round Champagne Bronze knobs from D.Lawless Hardware
Navy blue with champagne bronze hardware is super hot right now and has been for the past year. Everywhere I see it – on kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, and dressers – I love it. So I really wanted to try the gold color tone on this dresser.
Champagne bronze has a gold tone to it, but is much softer than brass or even the duller brushed brass.
I took the original wood knobs and spray painted them to try out the gold tone. But, I do plan to order THESE square champagne bronze knobs or THESE round champagne bronze knobs from D.Lawless Hardware. Aren’t they gorgeous!
You can see lots more champagne bronze knobs on Amazon HERE.
The dresser looks much darker in the following photo, almost black and you can see the gold tone looks beautiful on that too.
The Regal Select paint I had on hand in Hale Navy was an eggshell finish. This is much flatter than I usually use on furniture so I like to add a clear topcoat with a little more sheen. I used Benjamin Moore’s Stays Clear in low lustre. The perfect sheen.
The clear protective coat is also important to protect the paint from chipping where the drawers slide in and out. Especially since these are recessed drawers.
And finally… here’s a little photo bomb from our pup Koda. He’s now 9 months old and my little shadow. Koda has the biggest personality of any dog we’ve every had. He’s talkative, emotional, playful, protective, and fits perfectly into our family like he’s been here for years.
