Yesterday I talked about one of my main accomplishments of 2014 – designing a new style sidelight window panel and its packaging. Today, I reveal a second… painted furniture.
I’ve been painting furniture for years; but they’ve either been upcycled pieces I planned to keep for myself or those I just quickly refinished and re-sold at a yard sale for a quick profit. This past year was the year when I decided to focus on refinishing and making the finished product a high quality, beautiful piece of furniture.
This meant trying different products, researching new techniques and working to perfect them. This will be an ongoing process, but I feel as though I’ve made leaps & bounds in 2014. I’m narrowing down the products I like to use and discounted many.
This tall, feminine dresser is one such example. It’s been refinished and painted with Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint in Old Ochre (a light cream color), given a coat of AS’s Clear Wax, and then buffed to a slight sheen.
My first attempt at using wax was several months ago. I used a dark wax over a black stain. The result was very filmy and it marked up very easy. I clearly added too much wax, didn’t wipe off the excess, didn’t let it dry overnight, or buff it enough. Annie Sloan’s Clear Wax was much easier to use. I invested in a waxing brush, applied very little, let it dry overnight, and buffed it the next day. The result was a beautiful smooth surface that had a light sheen.
With each piece, I avoid past mistakes and I move on to try new new techniques. Yes, 2014 was a good year and I’m really looking forward to 2015.
This tall dresser painted in Old Ochre is for sale in my Shop.
