Yesterday was Easter Sunday and one of the most relaxing Easters I can remember. Usually holidays are spent at my parents’ house – memories I will always treasure – but that also means I usually stress about making sure my parents don’t over-work themselves – which they usually do anyway. This Easter, however, we spent with my sister and her family and while I still prepared food and helped with clean-up, there were so many more helping hands available and I could watch my parents relax and enjoy the day.
Another reason I was able to enjoy the day so much is because of the amount of projects that have been completed in the past few weeks, including refinishing this cedar chest.
A friend and client of mine recently built a new house. She has some fantastic solid wood pieces of furniture that she wanted to upate to fit into her new color scheme of gray, white, and black. That’s where I came in.
We began with this cedar storage chest that would be placed in her entryway. As you can see it’s solid wood, but a little too country for her new, modern home. The chest was completely sanded to remove the minor dents in the pine wood and remove the flower emblem on the front and then painted in the modern colors of her new home.
She asked for the based to painted in the gray of her hallway walls and the top to be black. To add a little dimension to the top I lightly distressed the edges to coordinate with the distressing on the base of her dining table, which you’ll see very soon.
