Black Stained Antique Buffet

All of the stars seemed to align with this antique buffet.  Solid wood.   Dove-tailed drawers all in perfect condition and all that slide smoothly.  All brass hardware present and accounted for.   And the price was one I couldn’t turn down.   Aaaaah… yes, all of the stars aligned just perfectly.

Here’s a peek at the buffet when I found it at the local thrift store.

You can see the top was really scratched.

You can also see that those scratches were no match for my DeWalt rotary sander.

If anyone knows what this gorgeous wood is, I’d love to know.  My guess is walnut.  It’s super smooth with a fairly straight grain; but I’m not quite sure because this buffet is pretty heavy.

The wood is so beautiful I couldn’t imagine covering it up with paint, so I opted for a stain.

 

Three coats of General Finishes Black Gel Stain covered very nicely and, unlike paint, still let the wood grain show through.  The buffet was clear-coated with two coats of Minwax Satin Wipe-On Polyurethane.

 

To highlight the wood even more, I very lightly distressed just along the sharp edges.  The rubbed off finish resembles those you’d find at Pottery Barn.
