Hope you had as beautiful and as productive a weekend as I did. It was filled with some very proud parental moments and some great painting projects – including an amazing desk, hutch and chair.
It actually wasn’t until Sunday afternoon that I was able to dig in and start painting this weekend. My kids’ sports take priority – I do my best to make every game. My daughter’s basketball team actually competed in State competitions this weekend. I couldn’t be more proud of every one of the girls on her team. With a very short bench of only six players, these girls gave 110% effort every game… the entire game. Although they lost their final game by just one basket, in the minds of their parents, they won by long shot!
After all that excitement it was down to painting… which relaxes me and brought my blood pressure down a few notches.
This desk & hutch set was a thrift store find. The store manager told me she was hesitant to even put the piece out for sale because it needed so much work. Funny… it really wasn’t that much work.
Where she saw furniture covered with a little girl’s makeup, paint, and glitter that would need a complete overhaul, I saw a gorgeous set that only needed a light sanding and fresh coat of paint.
Believe it or not, the original factory finish was still in excellent condition under all of that nail polish and glitter. It was my goal to maintain as much of that as possible; so I very gently began sanding with some 60 grit sandpaper in the heavily coated areas. In areas where there were just small marks, I washed with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.
Two coats of Benjamin Moore Advanced paint later, the desk & hutch looked like new again.
Some of the lovely features include storage…
A fold-down center drawer to hold a keyboard…
A very large hutch with tons of cubbies…
Large moldings…
A cork board… which I freshened up with a coat of Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint in Old Ochre…
One of my favorite features of this desk though is it’s color versatility. The drawer fronts have slide-out panels that can be turned over to instantly highlight a new color.
The color of this chair from my stock already coordinated perfectly with the off-white of the desk. I simply replaced a broken bolt on one of the legs and recovered it in a grain-sack inspired fabric.
The chair was already perfectly lightly distressed.
This Desk, Hutch & Chair set is for sale in my Shop.
Stay tuned to see the turquoise end tables… to be revealed later this week.
Thank you & Enjoy!
