Natural wood is beautiful. Naturally-aged wood — that look you get at Restoration Hardware — is next-level stunning. It’s that piece of furniture that looks like it just came out of a 150+ year old home in Europe and will last another 50 or 100 years. That’s why it was my goal to figure out how to re-create a naturally-aged finish and it’s become one of my specialties. See a sample on this natural wood 3-drawer dresser…
Natural is always better than artificial. You can see the quality. You can feel the buttery-soft finish that was created from years of people rubbing their hand across it – like a river stone smoothed by the years of running water.

If you don’t mind putting a little work in, there is a much less expense way to achieve the look of a naturally-aged wood dresser.
- Start with a solid wood piece of furniture
- Sand the finish
- Apply a clear-coat to protect the wood
Well… there’s more to the technique than that, but that’s the basic idea.

The next few photos show the finished dresser. I hope this gives you lots of inspiration.

Included in this ebook is the exact clear topcoat I use with this finish. It’s the one topcoat I’ve found that does not discolor or change the sheen of the natural, sanded wood.
Here are a few other pieces on which I used this same technique:
