This winter was filled with hope. I had hoped to finish painting our kitchen and dining room. I had hoped to refinish two of my own dressers. I had hoped to recover the fabric chairs in our living room. And I had hoped to make new curtains and valances for my kitchen and dining area. Then life happened and a crazy flu illness went through our house, scholarship applications were due, and then there was hockey (Need I say more?).
Well, I’ve been working really hard to get back on track and complete some of these projects so I stopped by a local interior design shop having a clearance sale on hundreds of bolts of fabrics. It was a small shop that had been in town for 40 years and but was now closing its doors.
After more than two hours in the shop, I wasn’t able to find what I needed; but I did take home this amazing embroidered linen fabric. You know when you find that perfect fabric? Well, this fabric was me.
The first thing that struck me was the large print in bright white. I loved the bright white embroidery on the light khaki linen background. The background isn’t a beige or a cream. It’s more of a warm gray; but a very light, bright warm gray if that makes sense.
The white embroidery was stunning. Very well done. I imagine the regular retail price on this fabric is somewhere between $60-$100 per yard.
The color coordinates really well with the jute runners in our kitchen and the new area rug ordered for our living room. The jute runners are from West Elm. We’ve had them for about 10 years and I love them, but the ends are starting to come apart. I’m considering replacing them with this Safavieh runner on Amazon (affiliate link). They’re about half the price and almost identical.
I’d love to recover the upholstered chairs in my living room with this fabric, but then again I’d probably treat it with white gloves if I did. With three kids and a dog that jumps on the furniture, that’s far from practical. Pillows may be a better option.
The shape of these club chairs works well in the space, but the I’m not a fan of the yellowish-beige fabric against the gray walls. I’d really like to slipcover them in either white duck or navy blue denin so I can wash them occassionally.
Tip: A friend of mine told me she had chairs re-upholstered at a prison. If I remember correctly, chairs that would have cost more than $600 each to re-upholster were done by the inmates for only $250 each.
The brown faux-leather footstool is now gone and our new area rug just arrived and will replace the one you see in the photo. Hopefully I’ll be able to finish painting the walls in the adjoining kitchen/dining rooms soon too.
