Today, I want to share with you a TED Talk that changed my life and the way I work. The talk is about the four stages of a woman’s cycle and how, once we recognize them, we can use them to be more productive, successful women.
Alisa Vitti is the presenter. She attended John Hopkins University but then later turned to Functional medicine as she healed her own body. Her Tedx talk is titled, Loving Your Lady Parts as a Path to Success, Power & Global Change. She discusses how food can heal, which after following a modified Whole30 diet myself in the past, I truly believe.
However, the part of her talk that I keep coming back to is where she talks about the four hormonal ratios we, as women, go through in a one-month cycle. Here’s a summary:
Week 1: The Follicular phase
This is when we have more access to creative energy than at any other time of the month. During this phase you should dream…. mastermind… plan… write… create!
Week 2: The Ovulatory phase
At this time we have our best communication skills and the most energy. People are drawn to you during this phase. This is the time when you want to have important conversations.
Week 3: The Luteal phase
The luteal phase starts right after ovulation and ends when your period begins. During this phase we become very detail oriented. It’s the time to organize. Clean the closets. Re-organize your office to be more efficient.
Week 4: The Menstrual phase
During the menstrual phase we have the most conversation between the right and left hemispheres of the brain. At this time, you’re most able to receive those “gut” instincts. Evaluate your life and follow your gut.
Isn’t this the most amazing piece of information!
Do you realize what this means?
You can actually plan your weeks to be more efficient
by capitalizing on your strengths!
Have you ever tried to work on a project but just can’t seem to focus enough to complete it? This happens to me all the time; but since I am now conscious of these phases, I now just stop what I’m doing and tell myself… “This needs to wait another week. Today, I’m in my planning phase so I need to make plans for the upcoming weeks.”
Understand these phases and you’ll waste far less time struggling when the work isn’t happening naturally.
You’ll now be able to plan your job interviews and business meetings to coincide with your communication phase and only make big decisions during your menstrual phase.
This information is huge!
Working with clients has become so much easier. I always plan my meetings during week 2. I write the majority of my blog posts for the month at the tail end of my Week 4 and throughout my Week 1. I recognize that during Week 3 writing is difficult for me so I spend that entire week cleaning my home and painting furniture.
Furthermore, it will help you understand and work more efficiently with other women!
Occasionally, I help woman entreprenuers build their websites. This requires input from both myself and my clients. If I see that she’s struggling forming the words or communicating how she wants a site organized, I know that I have to help her along more, let her sit on the information for a week or two, and then we re-schedule out work session for another day.
So not only will you be able to schedule your own work to conincide with your cycle, you’ll be able to better understand your clients.
Start tracking your own phases. Write down the things you can and cannot focus on during those weeks. You’ll begin to see the pattern and become a much more productive woman.
I’ve posted the original TED talk video below, but first I hope you’ll follow Entri Ways by email.
