Living in New England means we have some of the most amazing changes of seasons. The crisp green of Spring, the refreshing blues of Summer, the deep reds of Fall, and my favorite… the cool whites of Winter. I love the feeling when I walk into my living room on a snowy day and see the bright white snow mixed with cool grays outside my windows and they’re washing into the room like a bright light.
White rooms and white painted furniture are by far my favorite. Little does my husband know that the next time our walls need painting, they’ll go from the soft yellow to a warm, clean white; so every time I walk into my home it will feel like a bright, snowy day.
White rooms make a perfect backdrop for colorful statement pieces of furniture and accessories. I love many colors – blues, reds, greens, yellows, grays, etc, etc., etc. When I find a piece of furniture that appears on the surface to be pretty average, I imagine how I can transform it with color so that it will truly stand out in a room.
Last week I found this twin bed with pineapple finials (or pinecones… not sure exactly which). The scroll of the headboard, the pineapple finials, and the carved, turned legs gave this plain wood bed stunning lines that could easily transform into show pieces with a little – or a lot of – color.
Google searches turned up these beautiful red beds. I’ve noted the original sources under each image.
I even came across the exact Red Painted Bed with pineapple finials over at 551 East.
It just so happened I had purchased a gallon of this exact color red for only $2.00. It was a mis-tint so the price was marked way down. Just as Julia had done at 551 East, I sanded the stain back just enough to hold the paint. Then painted it red. I skipped the white primer on purpose since I wanted the original wood tone to show through when I distressed the edges. The result… stunning…
The pineapple (or pinecone) finials look gorgeous in red.
A light sanding along the edges just barely allows the golden wood tone underneath to show through.
The bed was finished off with two coats of clear satin polycrylic to protect the finish.
This red bed (headboard & footboard) is for sale. For more info, click the Shop Furniture tab at the top of this page.

I have the exact same twin bed I picked up for free recently. I looked at it yesterday and wondered what color to paint it. I have some inspiration now!
