It’s been nice not to have have to trudge through the eight feet of snow we’ve had in the past few weeks to find my last three furniture makeover projects; instead they’ve come to me. Two dressers were offered to me from clients I delivered finished pieces to and a local contractor removed these Asian-inspired built-in cabinets from his renovation as the new owner opted to move away from the 1960’s shag-carpeted, disco, Asian decor. Whewww! That’s a mouthful and quite of mix of styles don’t you think?
The original set of cabinets was not so pretty in the original form. They featured chipped black laminate and some sort of manufactured wood that left a shower of wood shavings in my truck on the ride home.
What they did have however, were a sought-after size, drawers that moved smoothly on metal rollers, and interesting gold hardware.
I stared at these cabinets for hours in my basement wondering if I should keep the Asian details or transform them completely. I considered staying with the original style which would mean black and gold or perhaps red lacquer and gold; but then again I really wanted to instill my own style. Opting with the latter, I pulled out the paint. I tried turquoise blue, then green, then red, and even gray; but they just weren’t making an impact the way I knew they could.
I kept picturing them as nightstands flanking a gorgeous bed and finally decided these cabinets needed to be a bright, versatile white.
They could also work well together as one long media cabinet.
Although it’s not my style, the gold Asian hardware really is beautiful so that stayed.
The cabinets received three coats of General Finishes Milk paint in bright white and they were finished off with two coasts of General Finishes clear, flat topcoat.
The gold accents have beautiful detail to them and truly make these otherwise plain cabinets shine.
