Cobalt Blue Pedastal Table

This large pedestal dining table was one of my first finds.  Its transformation from severely-distressed, banged-up, brown-stained wood to this now modern cobalt blue is spectacular!

Here’s how I found it.  Someone actually took great care in making it.

As you can see, the top was pretty distressed and required a few hours of sanding.

Underneath that brown stain was some beautiful wood – pine I think.

I was able to sand off all of the polyurethane and most of the brown stain.

Two coats of Kilz primer covered the remaining brown.

I imagine this table top was once a large oval dining table on a different base.  It opened and expanded to accommodate a leaf or two.  Since I was securing it to this pedestal base, I needed to eliminate the open seam that ran down the center.  I first applied a white calk (the type you would use on baseboard seams) and then a thick coat of wood filler.

A few coats of cobalt blue paint later (sanding between each) and the seam magically vanished.

I wanted to go a little wild on this one so in addition to the bright blue color, I added this bright white star.  I will also apply a clear polycrylic to protect and smooth the finish even more.

I wish I had a spot for this one in my house.

Maybe when we E-V-E-N-T-U-A-L-L-Y finish the cellar;  but for now, as you can see in the background, it’s a hockey rink and my workshop!
