Being from New England, I always loved the classic look of two Adirondack chairs in the back yard or on a front porch. I had inexpensive plastic ones for a while, but they cracked and couldn’t be repaired. Then I found these adirondack chairs at a yard sale for just $15 each.
Of course they were worn, weathered, and wiggly when I found them, but the potential hit me like a ton of bricks. The shape was identical to the wooden chairs I’ve seen for $200 to $300 each. These were mine!
The chairs had never been painted which made my job much easier. They reminded me of weathered cedar shakes on a Cape Cod home. Aside from being dried out, the wood was in perfect condition. It just needed moisture. Lots and lots of moisture.
I tightened and replaced several screws, sanded with 120 grit sand paper, and brushed on a coat of a light gray Olympic ONE paint with primer. It happened to be what I had leftover from another project. Olympic ONE is one of my favorite paints. I’ve tried several others and found this to have one of best coverages.
Here’s the result after two coats of the light gray.
I originally planned to keep the light gray color, but decided I wanted them to contrast with the white exterior of my house. So I painted them a dark sea blue – the same color as my front door & shutters.
This exterior semi-gloss finish will protect the chairs outside for many years.
Yet the wood grain continued to show so they didn’t look like plastic.
