This weekend was busy finishing up a few different pieces of furniture. Today I’d like to show you the beautiful sideboard I refinished in Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint in Granite.
Here’s what the buffet looked like when I found it. There wasn’t much detail to it but the drawers were well put together and it offered tons of storage. As you can see it was a pretty basic design which reminded me of the clean, modern lines you see in the furniture from Crate & Barrel – my favorite furniture store!
That being the case, I envisioned this piece in a modern white with brushed nickel hardware.
As I do with all of my furniture, I sanded it down to give it a good cleaning and prep it for the latex paint I had intended to use.
Taped it off
Then primed and painted it an off-white.
Unfortunately, it just wasn’t turning out the way I had envisioned. I stared at it for days debating whether or not to paint it a darker color. Finally, I opted to do a complete 360 degree turnaround and try Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint to achieve a distressed, aged look.
The sideboard received two coats of the Granite paint and a coat of dark wax. I expected the wax to not only protect the finish but also give it a light sheen. In this case it didn’t, so I went with it and lightly sanded to distress it further.
Wanting to create a contrasting modern look, I painted the top to resemble stainless steel.
Even though I applied a dark wax to the chalk paint finish, it still wasn’t enough of a sheen for me; so I brushed on a coat of clear, satin Polycrylic. The polycrylic not only gave me the satin sheen I was working toward, but also offered a much better layer of protection over the wax alone and preserved the intentional distressing from the sand paper.
The interior was cleaned and got a light coat of polyurethane.
Added these gorgeous brushed nickel knobs.
The dark, granite color on this piece worked much better than the lighter white.
