There are certain types of furniture I prefer not to paint in order to maintain its original integrity. Solid wood antiques and mid-century modern furniture pieces are two that immediately come to mind. Even with some wear and tear these are often better refinished in stain. So today let's talk a little about preserving the integrity of solid wood furniture.
Why I refinish furniture
Painted furniture is all the craze right now. It has been for the past few years; but I didn't get into ...

Layered Paint & Stain for a Naturally Weathered Look
Hello there! I've been missing writing to you this past week and am finally able to share with you this bench makeover with layered paint and stain for a naturally weathered look.
You see, my Mac laptop has slowly been dying to a pace where I was barely able to type a sentence in the past two weeks. The "spinning color wheel of doom", as they call it online, was constantly showing on my screen.
In the past, I've been able to clear that spinning wheel and continue working by catching ...

Using Hockey Stick Wax to Repair an Antique Dresser
Today's furniture makeover took several hours of repair work, but it was so worth it. There was peeling veneer and swollen drawers, but several days of elbow grease and a little hockey stick wax took care of both. Yes, hockey stick wax. I explain how later in this post. Now, this antique dresser with Hepplewhite drawer pulls is absolutely beautiful dressed in dark navy blue.
At first look, the dresser looked as though it simply needed a refresh of the brown, stained finish. If you ...

Building Brick Planters & Yard Work
What a gorgeous beginning to a long Memorial Day weekend and the perfect opportunity to get some yard work done. So many people we know travel this weekend every year to their lake and beach homes. Not us. We have our own bit of paradise right here at home; but we did need to get some yard work done. So my husband, our three teenagers, and myself spent the day spreading mulch, laying sod, pulling weeds, power washing, and building planters along the back walk.
When we first built the ...

Antique White Queen Bed
There are a few tricks to refinishing and selling pre-owned beds. Many furniture refinishes won't bother with them and most consignment shops won't even take them because they've found them too diffcult to sell. I disagree if you choose the right bed and the right finishes. You can check out my earlier post on exactly how to choose and refinish beds that sell well here. Today, I'm sharing my latest makeover... a solid wood, antique, white queen bed.
Here's the bed in its original ...

Navy Blue Twin Bed
Here's the 'before' of a solid pine wood bed that's been transformed into a navy blue twin bed. The bed was in great condition but had some very feminine flowers painted on the headboard. The flowers were in direct contrast to the chunky, masculine spindles. Can you see where I'm going with this?
That's right, while originally a girl's bed, this bed actually had the perfect makings of a boy's bed; and since I've been loving navy blue lately and trying out high gloss, this was the ...

1950’s Navy MCM Dresser
You should want to constantly stare at every piece of furniture in your home. That's how you know you love it. It's how you know you chose the right piece for you! This navy MCM dresser was one of those furniture pieces for me. I just want to stare at it. It's so stunning and the transformation was so spectacular that it amazes me.
I'm really hesitant to even post today's furniture makeover because I really don't want to part with this mid-century dresser, but if I didn't sell the ...

General Finishes Winter White Glaze Over Yellow
Sharing an older bedroom set that was refinished and showcases this pretty yellow. The soft layered look was created using General Finishes Winter White Glaze over a lemon yellow chalk paint.
The set actually consists of a twin poster bed, complete with headboard, footboard, and two side rails, a matching twin headboard, an antique 3-drawer dresser, and a small side table.
Each of the pieces was picked up separately and while they aren't exact matches, they all have similar qualities which, ...

Painting Over a High Gloss Finish
Do you have furniture with a high-gloss, factory-finish that needs a refresh? The kind of finish that's so glass-like you're not sure if paint will adhere to it? I'm here to tell you that painting over a high gloss finish is possible... with the right prep work.
.
This adorable three-drawer dresser I showed you yesterday had a very glossy, sprayed-on factory finish. Painted dressers like these come with a few unknowns... Unknowns that you have to consider before you ever consider ...

Benjamin Moore’s Woodlawn Blue
If it's a light, neutral blue dresser you've been looking for, today's your day! This adorable three-drawer dresser has been refinished in Benjamin Moore's Woodlawn Blue - a very light, almost white and bordering on gray blue.
The dresser started off as a with a very smooth, high gloss factory finish, which meant I had a great surface to start. In tommorrow's post I share exactly how to paint over a high-gloss finish so be sure to sign up for Entri Ways' emails and I'll deliver it ...

Gluten-Free Crepes
A few years ago I decided to eat far less gluten. Gluten is a general name for the proteins found in wheat, rye, barley, and triticale (a cross between wheat and rye). Gluten is basically the glue that holds foods together. Just spinkle some flour made with wheat in your kitchen sink and try to wash it down. You'll see what is meant by glue when it sticks to the sides of the sink. Imagine this happening in your stomach!
Eating a high-gluten diet was having adverse affects on my ...

Benjamin Moore Polo Blue Dresser
Last week I revealed the Long Polo Blue eight-drawer dresser that was refinished for a client. Painting with deep navy blue is one of my favorite colors. My son's bedroom furniture is the navy blue Camp collection from Pottery Barn and I've never grown tired of the color. As a result, whenever I get a masculine dresser, I paint it navy blue.
Of course I cannot find the "before" photo I took. It's lost is virtual-land somewhere on my laptop; but here's a similar dresser. This is ...
