When I walk through a Restoration Hardware showroom, I am in awe of their furniture. Their pieces are stunning. RH fabric and leather furniture pieces are ones on which you want to curl up with a thick blanket. Their wood furniture is beautifully oversized and chunky. And one of my favorite things to do is to re-create that Restoration Hardware-Style with dining tables – but for a fraction of the price of course.
If you've never been to an ...

Rustic Stained Top & Slate Gray Coffee Table
This coffee table has a little bit of a mixed personality, but it's purpose is speaking loud and clear! It's a solid wood, durable piece of furniture with a rustic-finish surface that is ready to take on a family. The surface has been completely sanded back, re-stained with black stain, and finished with a clear wax for a low lustre sheen and water-resistant surface. The final color looks more like a dark walnut and the rustic finish should only improve with use and age.
The base has been ...

How to Quickly Paint a Bathroom Vanity Cabinet
It was time to paint our master bathroom and that included painting the vanity cabinet. Many people are hesitant to paint bathroom cabinets for fear they may not do the proper prep work, will paint in a way that shows brush marks, or will just not use the right paint that lasts. Well, fear no more! Here's how to quickly paint a bathroom vanity cabinet.
I've been painting furniture for nearly six years. And through a ton of trial and error I've learned that painting those freestanding ...

Updating to Black Light Fixtures
A few weeks ago I told you about the home project list I put together and the highest priority items we planned to work on first. Since then the list has been completely turned upside down. But, it's still all good, because we're getting things done and making a ton of progress painting and updating to black light fixtures. Here are the new black fixtures we chose and where we found them for much less than I ever thought we would pay.

Refinished Natural Oak Dining Table
Re-creating a naturally-aged finish has become one of my specialties - particularly on tables. There's something about a heavy, chunky, solid wood table that's been around for centuries that seems to bring with it family, stories, struggles, and laughs to every dinner that was ever hosted there. So when I come across an older table that's been used and discarded I always think about how I can refinish it to last another 100 years - just like was done with this natural oak dining ...

Why You Need to Make a Project List and Trust Your Instinct When Choosing Finishes
A few weeks ago I told you about the home project list I put together and the highest priority items we planned to work on first. Since then the list has been completely turned upside down. But, it's still all good, because we're getting things done and making a ton of progress painting and updating light fixtures.
Working From a Project List
You can see our original (very long) project list HERE. I make these lists to get organized, see everything in one place, and then ...

The Best Paint for Chairs, Benches, and Table Bases
When you paint as many chairs as I have, you get to know which water-based paints work best and which do not. There are some paints that do not adhere well and some that are more work to apply than others. After all the trial and error over the past several years, I've been able to find, in my opinion, the best water-based paint for chairs.
Maybe this post should be titled, The Second Best Paint For Chairs. Oil-based paint is actually the most durable and probably the very best choice ...

Cauliflower Fried Rice
I'm sort of a rice addict and often add way too much rice to my chicken dishes. Jasmine, Basmati, or brown rice. It doesn't matter, I love them all. But too much rice, makes me gain weight :-(. So to cut down on the carbs, I make cauliflower fried rice. It's delicious!
Did you know that cauliflower takes on the taste of other foods and sauces you cook with it? Yup, it does, which makes it super versatile to adapt to your own taste.
I learned to make cauliflower fried rice a few ...
